Bio
Dylan Williams was born in Guanajuato, México in 1968. He attended the school of plastic arts at the University of Guanajuato. After discovering his inclination for painting, he moved to New York City in 1991 where he attended The Art Students League and developed his attraction for urban and natural landscapes.
Dylan moved to D.u.m.b.o. Brooklyn where he painted and drew the urban landscape of the city. Most notably, he created a series of oil paintings that capture the ubiquitous roof top water tanks in the city. Dylan has exhibited his work in numerous museums and galleries in the US and Mexico, including the Allen Sheppard Gallery, Jeannie Freilich Fine Art and The Painting Center in New York City, and The Museo Diego Rivera in Guanajuato, Mexico.
ART STATEMENT FOR
ENCAUSTIC AND WATERCOLORS
This series of work explores new possibilities of representing a landscape as an abstract idea directly associated with music and sound, painting in such a manner similar to that employed by an orchestra composer.
I begin by looking at nature or urban scenes as staff lines in a sheet of music. I place buildings, landmarks, and important features as the notes or symbols in music notations. I look for the essential notes that have continuity within a composition and make these the central part of the piece while adhering to form, perspective, space, and tonal values.
By painting details to a minimal point of rendition, my work is transformed into a personal abstract interpretation of a landscape based upon varied analogies between music and art.
This gives me the opportunity to conceptualize something that cannot be represented physically, but which still offers enough information to be a complete concept in our minds and is understood on different levels. The final rendering includes the same basic principals contained in music such as rhythm, variation, equilibrium, tempo and harmony.
The use of white space in these works expresses silent moments where the melody or sounds take a break. However here white is not regarded as an empty space rather as an area full of possibilities to be filled by one's imagination.
